Joint Office of Economic Development Announces

Medina and Wayne Counties as New Members

KENT, OHIO, January 24, 2005 – The Joint Office of Economic Development (JOED) has announced the addition of Medina and Wayne counties to its regional economic development partnership.  In a ceremonial signing today at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls, the commissioners of the seven current member counties officially welcomed the two new counties as members of the JOED and the Northeast Ohio Trade & Economic Consortium (NEOTEC).  NEOTEC is the private, nonprofit organization providing regional economic development services on behalf of the JOED.

“The addition of Medina and Wayne counties to the JOED reflects our commitment to the spirit of regional cooperation on which this organization is founded,” said Chuck Keiper, JOED Chairman and Portage County Commissioner.  “This is an important step in Northeast Ohio’s continued economic growth and stability, as our nine counties unite in the common goal of promoting Northeast Ohio and enhancing its competitive advantages in the global marketplace,” Keiper said.

The JOED and NEOTEC were formed in 1996 by the executive of Summit County and the commissioners of Columbiana, Mahoning, Portage, Stark and Trumbull counties.  Ashtabula became the seventh member county in January 2002.

Under its contract with the JOED, NEOTEC works as a regional force for the nine member counties, providing programs that support the efforts of the counties’ local economic development organizations.  “This expansion enables NEOTEC to extend economic development support to a larger regional area and to pool the resources of nine economically vibrant counties,” said Ron DeBarr, President & CEO of NEOTEC.  “We look forward to assisting Medina and Wayne counties with their economic development initiatives,” DeBarr said.

According to DeBarr, NEOTEC administers three organizations to implement its economic development strategies for the region:  Foreign-Trade Zone 181 to promote international commerce, the International Trade Assistance Center (ITAC) to provide export counseling assistance to area businesses, and the Northeast Ohio Logistics Network to help improve regional market access.

“Medina County is pleased to become a part of the JOED and NEOTEC,” said Stephen Hambley, Medina County Commissioner.  “We’re confident that this regional approach to economic development will continue to strengthen Northeast Ohio and create a better economic future for all member counties,” said Hambley.

Wayne County Commissioner Cheryl Noah said that NEOTEC’s support programs will be a key element in the county’s strategic planning.  “As Wayne County continues to grow and plan for its future economic needs, we will certainly utilize the many services and programs offered by NEOTEC in order to maximize our economic development potential.  This is why we sought membership in the JOED, and we anticipate a long-term, beneficial relationship,” Noah said.
