France and Northeast Ohio Form Partnership

Flag of FranceIn April of 1999, NEOTEC joined forces with the Economic Development Agency (ADERC) for the region of Chalon-sur-Saone, France. The partnership was officially put into action with the signing of a "Preliminary Protocol Agreement" which emphasizes the promotion of each other's respective region.

ADERC Chalon
Val de BourgogneOnly five months after signing the agreement, NEOTEC took the first step in implementing a "French Intern Program". Four interns from the Chalon region were selected to participate in the one year educational program. The interns are attending classes at Kent State University while working full time jobs. Landmark Plastics Inc. employs three of the interns and Dupont Dow Elastomers employ one. The interns are educated in the field(s) of Material Science (Engineering) and Automated Machine maintenance and repair.

Chalon is a technological region emphasizing plastics, logistics, electronics, engineering and the food industry. Due to its location, Chalon-sur-Saone has become the major industrial center between Paris and Lyon.

Strategic Alliance with Germany's Southwest Saxony Region

Flag of GermanyNortheast Ohio has formed a strategic alliance with the Southwest Saxony Region of Germany. As industrial regions in the midst of economic revitalization, both Northeast Ohio and Southwest Saxony face similar issues and stand to benefit from partnering with one another. This unique US-EU regional partnership has been featured in a published book by the European Union, Toward the Learning Region — Education and Regional Innovation in the European Union and the United States.

NEOTEC laid the groundwork by conducting a six month "German Intern"Chemnitz pilot program that commenced on January of 1999. Eight interns educated in the machining industry were chosen to work in area companies and attend courses at Kent State University. The participating companies were ASW Services, Semtorq and SSP Fittings.

Southwest Saxony is a magnet for electronics industry investment and innovation. Northeast Ohio has a high concentration of manufacturers of electronics, machinery and automotive products. Manufacturing in Northeast Ohio is concentrated on industrial applications rather than consumer goods.
